Donald Trump's inflammatory rhetoric might have awakened satirical comic strip Bloom County, its characters and creator up from a 25-year-nap.
Now Opus the Penguin, Milo and other wacky denizens of Berkeley Breathed's Pulitzer Prize-winning strip are headed for a comeback, more than a quarter-century after the strip went dark.
According to the new strip Breathed posted on Facebook on Monday, Opus awakens after what he discovers from Milo is a 25-year nap.
Separately, a posted photo of Breathed shows him at his computer with the caption, "A return after 25 years. Feels like going home."
It's not clear whether the revival is a one-off, or if Bloom County is back for an indefinite stay.
Immediately, Bloom fans on Twitter were exulting.
Others thought they understood why Bloom might be back:
"Dear Mr. Breathed, With Donald Trump returning to the Political Spectum, I believe it is only fitting. I have missed you guys," wrote Larry Warshall on Breathed's Facebook page.
"This creator can't precisely deny that the chap you mention had nothing to do with it,"
replied Breathed.
Whatever else he's known for, billionaire-turned-GOP presidential candidate Trump is a satirist's dream, providing endless fodder for cartoonists, late-night comedians and wiseguys on Twitter.
David Letterman even came out of retirement over the weekend to poke fun at Trump.
Whimsical Bloom County, which viewed politics and culture through the lens of a small town in Middle America, began in 1980, appearing in newspapers daily.
Breathed was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987, But in 1989, Breathed called a halt until now.
At least for one day.
